MISSISSIPPI — The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has once again stepped before the public with a simple but increasingly urgent message: they want to know exactly what happened to their son.
During the family’s fourth press conference, Nolan’s parents appeared alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Rev.
Al Sharpton, members of their legal team and Congresswoman Lucy McBath as questions surrounding Nolan’s death continue to generate national attention.
Despite weeks of investigation, Nolan’s parents said they still do not have the answer they have been seeking from the beginning.
“What happened to our son?” remains the central question.
Nolan’s mother described the approaching anniversary of what would have been his 19th birthday as particularly painful.
She said the reality of no longer having her son physically present has become increasingly difficult as August 19 approaches.
His father similarly described Nolan as the person who brought light and fun into their family.
The family emphasized that they are not demanding a predetermined conclusion.
They say they want truth, transparency and a complete investigation, regardless of where the evidence ultimately leads.
Calls Grow for Federal Investigation
One of the most significant developments from the press conference was a renewed demand for federal involvement.
Congresswoman Lucy McBath said the Congressional Black Caucus had formally requested a federal investigation into Nolan’s death. Later in the press conference, she clarified that a formal letter had already been sent and that federal authorities were being given seven days to respond.
Crump said federal resources could provide additional investigative support and stressed that Nolan’s family should receive the same level of attention any family would expect if their child died under unexplained circumstances.
Sharpton echoed that position, arguing that unanswered questions surrounding Nolan’s death justify continued scrutiny rather than premature conclusions.
The family’s representatives repeatedly emphasized that requesting further investigation does not mean they have already decided a crime occurred.
When asked whether they would accept a finding that Nolan’s death was a tragic accident if the evidence clearly supported that conclusion, Sharpton said they would accept the truth if the methodology and evidence behind it were clear.
That distinction became one of the strongest themes of the press conference.
The family says it is not asking investigators to reach a particular result.
It is asking investigators to demonstrate how they reached it.
Nolan’s Phone Remains a Key Focus
Another major issue concerns Nolan’s phone.
Attorneys for the family said they have been communicating with the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office and referenced a July 15 meeting at which investigative procedures were discussed.
According to the family’s legal team, the proposed plan is for the DA’s office, the family’s forensic experts and possibly the FBI to participate together in a single forensic examination of the device.
The purpose, they explained, is to preserve the integrity and chain of custody of the evidence rather than having multiple parties independently handle the phone.
The family’s attorneys said they are prepared to participate and are waiting for the DA’s office to establish a time and location for the examination.
That phone has become one of the most closely watched pieces of potential evidence in the case.
But the press conference did not reveal new forensic findings from the device.
Instead, attorneys stressed the importance of conducting the examination properly.
Family Pushes Back Against Rumors and Online Attacks
The press conference also addressed the enormous amount of speculation surrounding the case on social media.
Sharpton acknowledged that misinformation has distorted portions of the public discussion, but said the most troubling aspect has been attacks directed at Nolan’s parents.
The family never chose to become public figures, he argued.
They became visible because their son died and they began publicly asking for answers.
Crump also defended journalists and independent content creators who responsibly examine evidence, raise legitimate questions and discuss inconsistencies.
However, he drew a distinction between legitimate scrutiny and knowingly spreading false information.
The family’s position, according to its legal team, is that questions should not automatically be treated as defamation simply because they are uncomfortable.
August 19 Will Carry Special Meaning
The emotional center of the press conference remained Nolan’s family.
August 19 would have marked his 19th birthday.
Instead of celebrating with him, his parents will spend the day grieving and continuing their search for answers.
Crump called for a national day of prayer, while supporters are expected to gather for a prayer vigil in Ocean Springs.
Nolan’s mother asked people to pray not only for her son but for the entire family as they adjust to a life they never expected to face.
His father said future birthdays will inevitably contain both painful memories and moments of laughter as the family remembers who Nolan was.
But one thing remains unchanged.
They still want answers.
The family has preservation requests in place, an independent investigative team working alongside its attorneys and continuing communication with local authorities.
Its representatives say any future litigation will depend on what the evidence ultimately reveals rather than being the primary objective.
